Eduroam (education roaming) is an acronym for a roaming wireless network in the education and research area. Eduroam is a location independent wireless network, allowing mobility between participants' wireless infrastructure with seamless user authentication and enforcement of local security policy.
It provides an infrastructure that offers Internet connectivity to the users of the participating federations. Being part of eduroam allows users visiting another institution connected to eduroam to log on to the WLAN using the same credentials (username and password) the user would use if they were at their home institution. Depending on local policies at the visited institutions, eduroam participants may also have additional resources at their disposal.
Eduroam is the perfect environment for secure authenticated access for conferences, summits and forums. Small or large groups of multi-institutional attendees can login securely without the organisers dealing with username and password creation, dissemination of accounts and wireless problems. All this with a minimum administrative overhead.
Eduroam allows on demand wireless network access with mobility, security and ease of use enriching collaboration, e-science and institutional single sign on systems
